There are hundreds of wineries and vineyards in New Zealand. The winemaking market in New Zealand is one of the biggest and has been injecting millions of dollars into the country’s economy. They say that if you want to visit some of the best wineries in the world, New Zealand is where you go.
We can’t agree more, in fact, some of the best wineries can be found in the beautiful town of Wanaka, just next to the beautiful Lake Wanaka. If you want to know what New Zealand wine is about, these are the wineries you should visit.
Rippon Winery is recognised as one of the best ones in the Central Otago winemaking region. This winery has some of the oldest vines in the region producing some of the most flavourful wines. Rippon practices biodynamic farming without the use of irrigation at all.
Their Pinot Noir wine is the best in the region including Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir, Rippon Jeunesse Young Vine Pinot Noir, and the Rippon Emma’s Block Mature Vine Pinot Noir.
By the way, as you sip some of the finest wines, you also get to enjoy a magnificent view ofLake Wanaka and mountain ranges from afar.
The Lazy Dog
The Lazy Dog is a vineyard and a restaurant. It is a favourite spot among locals and visitors alike. The entire winemaking business is owned and operated by the Harker family. The Lazy Dog is divided into separate vineyards including LazyDog, Two Degrees, Valli, Locharburn and more.
Their wine tasting tour is something you can’t miss for sure. Lazy Dog offers a wide selection of crafted wines including Jack’s Prospect, Home Block, Chenin Over a Barrel and Shady Lady. One of their top products and the best seller is Jack’s Prospect Pinot Noir 2019.
They also serve some of the best platters of food made with local ingredients such as cured meats, black forest ham, Fromage and more. But we highly recommend you order the Matukituki Venison. The meat is cooked to the perfect rare level in green peppercorn, cream sauce and brandy.
Pair it up with some of their signature Pinot Noirs and you are good to go.
Maori Point Vineyard
Maori Point is yet another family-owned vineyard in Wanaka. They are mostly known for their “Gold Digger” sparkling wine. They offer one of the most exquisite and immersive wine tasting tours in town. They are located near the riverbank so after your wine tasting, you are allowed to go for a picnic in the afternoon.
Summer is the perfect time to visit the vineyard. Others, however, prefer to book tours during winter.
These are just three of the best wineries here in Wanaka. There is so much more to explore. It is not just about the wines but the history behind it all. Contact us today for help with your accommodation.
